Tests of the wireless connectivity were ran between Edimax BR-6324nL and Edimax EW-7711UMn – an USB wireless adapter with 802.11n support.
For proper measurement of performance we used two software products:
1. JPerf – tool based on IPerf, that can simulate TCP and UDP пparralel streams between two end IP devices an measures the maximal speed of the connection. In our tests we used 30 parallel streams for maximum load - we get the same results by using more.
2. The software coming with the USB wireless controller, which showed all values of the wireless signal.
Tests were done in three groups:
- The two devices are in the same room – distance between them is 1,5m, clear line of sight;
- There is a single concrete wall between the devices – distance is 6m;
- There are two concrete walls between the devices – distance is 15m.
We measured the signal strength in idle and under load. We also measured the maximal transfer at any situation, results are shown as real duplex performance in one direction, since Upstream and Downstream are consequential. This is what we've got:
Within all tests the maximal speed at which EW-7711UMn connected was 65Mbps, even when the two devices were placed close to one another. The graphics show what maximal speeds can be reached in the three tested scenarios, as well as what quality of the connection could be expected.
As for performance, we must admit that connection was established very fast and was rather stable even under maximum load. Generally performance is on the level for a product of this price range, but naturally it cannot reach the full 802.11n speed supported by its bigger and more expensive brothers.
